about

Traditional. Baring Gould Collection.
Baring Gould collected & collated many versions of this song and was the first to give it the title of ‘Widecombe Fair’. Previously it has been known by many different names; ‘Tom Pearce’, ‘Tom Pearce’s Grey Mare’, ‘Uncle Tom Cobley’, ‘Barnstaple Fair’, ‘Exeter Fair’, ‘Midsummer Fair’ etc etc ... The actual fair in Widecombe did not begin until 1850 yet the first published reference to the song ‘Old Cobley’ was published in Exeter in 1761!
